Honda struck gold in the sports car lode when the big Japanese firm came out with the S2000 two-seater 10 years ago. It was -- and still is -- a great road car. Sadly, it's being discontinued.

But not to fret. According to 4wheelnews.com, Honda is developing "two new sports cars. One is the CR-ZX, which apparently will be something like a sporty Insight because it will use the hybrid technology in combination with a direct-injection 2.5-liter engine. The other model will be a successor of the Honda S200, dubbed FF-S2000 by Japan's Best Car Magazine, which apparently will use a 3.5-liter V6 engine and the 4WD technology, which means that it will be a direct competitor to the Nissan GT-R."

It's interesting that they would think of using four-wheel-drive on a sports car. A few manufacturers already have it -- Porsche, Audi come to mind, not to mention behemoths like Bentley's Continental GT -- and I suppose it helps you slither over those snow-packed roads around Lake Tahoe come winter time.

It will also be interesting to see if Honda puts an automatic transmission in either of their new sports models. The S2000 was strictly a six-speed stick; no automatic was offered. That didn't seem to deter sales, and the car became a smash hit among club racers.
