Telsa Electric Sports Car

The future of energy efficiency is on display at the state fairgrounds this weekend. The featured car at the Living Green Expo is the Tesla. It's the fastest, all-electric, American-made sports car and it gets more than 200 miles per charge.

The Tesla is the brainchild of the computer generation. People who made their fortune in the Internet decided to build an electric sports car.

One is owned by Horst Rechelbacher, of Aveda fame, now an organic farmer living off the grid. He says this kind of car is the future.

"I think it's going to be this race. Who is going to make faster, cooler-looking cars [that are] environmentally sustainable?" said Rechelbacher.

But what about building more power plants to meet the demand?

"You know, you just put on your own little wind generator or solar generator. In Minnesota you'd probably need both, just enough to charge your car," said Rechelbacher.

He was kind enough to let WCCO's Don Shelby take the car for a spin. Shelby took a short test sprint at first to get the feel of a car that makes little noise and goes very fast. Then, it was off to a closed-off strip on the State Fairgrounds.

"They say this thing goes 0-60 in 3.8 seconds. We'll see. Here we go. Oh yes, holy mackerel!" exclaimed Shelby.

"Alright, I have to stop because there is a stop sign, but I don't think that the State Fair Chief of Police will ever catch me," he joked. "But I don't believe I'll ever be driving this fast on the State Fairgrounds again."

Doors at the Living Green Expo open Saturday and Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The event is free.
