TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - As the world’s automakers race to improve fuel economy and build new hybrid vehicles, there are many hurdles to clear and a few stumbling blocks in the way.

The industry has more or less agreed that lithium ionpowered hybrid electric vehicles will be the next gamechanging advancement, but that technology faces roadblocks as the industry tries to move that from a development stage and into driveways.

General Motors Corp. last week announced special, fuel-efficient editions of its 2009 Chevrolet Silverado.
