BMW has revealed details of the new X3 which is set to go on sale in the UK this Autumn. With sharper looks influenced by the BMW X5 and BMW X1, the fresh X3 promises to be a considerable improvement on the already very capable current model, with improvements in handling, efficiency and cabin quality.
Just one engine will be available at launch - the xDrive 20d with 184bhp and 380Nm of torque. With the standard manual gearbox this 2.0-litre diesel covers the 0-62mph sprint in 8.5 seconds, while economy is an impressive 50.4mpg while CO2 emissions are 149g/km - impressively low for a four-wheel drive vehicle.
This engine will be the most popular and is also available with BMW's eight speed automatic gearbox, which - like the manual - has an engine start-stop system fitted. It will be the first time it's been used with this new automatic gearbox and it's so advanced that CO2 emissions are actually lower than the manual, at 147g/km.
Thanks to four-wheel drive and a new suspension system plus electric power steering, the X3 promises to be great to drive too. For those who want to personalise the feel of their BMW X3, Variable Damper Control is available for the first time on this model. The electronically controlled dampers adapt to road surface conditions and the style of driving, while the driver is alter the dampers via the Drive Dynamic Control system which has Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes.
As standard, the new BMW X3 comes with xDrive permanent four-wheel drive, an electronically controlled system that ensures variable distribution of drive to the front and rear axles.
Inside BMW is promising high-grade materials. The instrument panel and centre console are orientated towards the driver, while the latest generation iDrive has a 6.5-inch screen as standard. Cabin storage should be good to with a variety of compartments, trays and cup holders. The three rear seats are set to offer outstanding comfort for travelling long distances and significantly more leg and elbow room compared to its predecessor.
The newcomer will go on sale in the Autumn with prices set at £30,490 OTR for the BMW X3 xDrive20d SE which is actually £115 less than the outgoing model, yet it's equipped as standard with Nevada leather upholstery, two-zone air conditioning, iDrive controller and a colour display.
