Suzuki is all set to debut two environmentally friendly concept cars at this month 41st Tokyo Motor Show. The two cars are: A plug-in hybrid version of the Swift five-door hatch back and a hydrogen-powered version of the SX4 also known as SX4-FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle).

Much like the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, the Swift Plug-In uses a series hybrid system.
The hybrid Swift has a 660cc petrol engine and an electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are recharged via a domestic plug socket. The car has a range of 20km (around 12.5 miles) on electric power alone. The petrol engine also has a generator to charge the batteries, while on the move.
The plug-in hybrid is basically for users who travel low mileages of around 20 km every day. If it proves to be successful, Suzuki may consider selling it further. As for the Japanese domestic market, the car could make it to manufacture within a couple of years.

The other car SX4 – FCV, a fuel cell based, will be on display at the upcoming auto show in the land of the rising sun. The car has been on test in Japan for the past year on public roads. The car will be using US General Motors fuel cell technology. The car was first shown at the 2008 Paris auto show. The five-door hatchback is now backing with some alterations. The specifications for SX4 – FCV are: SX4 FCV Fuel-Cell output = 80kW, Motor output = 68kW. SX4 FCV is equipped with 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen tank. Top speed is said to be over 90 mph, and the SX4-FCV has a maximum range of 150 miles.

It also has a light and compact capacitor, which encourages driving performance as it recovers energy during braking. It then uses the energy to reduce fuel cell loading under acceleration.
