At a time when Tata motors is grappling with the Singur issue, there is some respite for the Indian automaker as the car has been homologated by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) a government-industry cooperative that tests vehicles for conformity to norms under Central Motor Vehicle Rules. It has also been learnt that the Rs. 1 lakh car's mileage has been certified by them. Now the car has met all the specified criteria for roadworthiness laid out by the government including emissions or noise & vibration and can now ply on Indian roads. Reliable sources have revealed that Tata Motors' head of Engineering Research Centre, Clive Hickman has already received Nano's clearance certificate recently after being subjected to more than 100 tests of various kinds at the ARAI's Pune facility over a period of four months. Now the car conforms to Euro IV emission standards which would be applicable in India from 2010.

Now the certificate will be delivered to all regional transport offices in India before commencing its registration for sale.

During the Auto Expo 2008, the company had announced Nano would be a 33 PS (33 hp/24 kW) car fitted with a 623cc rear mounted petrol engine and rear wheel drive, and will be having a fuel economy of 4.55 L/100 km (21.97 km/L, 51.7 mpg (US), 62 mpg (UK)) under city road conditions, making one of the most fuel-efficient car on Indian roads.

Ratan Tata has recently said that when the Nano gets launched later this year, it may come with a certified fuel efficiency indicator that other passenger car and two wheeler manufacturers across the country will provide next year. These fuel efficiency figures will be displayed at the company's dealerships and will also be mentioned on Nano's windshield. They'll also be supplied to buyers along with the documentation of the product.
