Peugeot has signed an agreement with Mitsubishi to begin building and marketing a new electric car in Europe based on Mitsu’s i-MiEV platform. The agreement builds upon a previous memorandum of understanding and solidifies the two companies as partners in next generation car technology.

The car is set to begin production and sale in Europe by late in 2010. Peugeot expects to sell 25,000 of the cars to the European market per year. CitroĂ«n, Peugeot’s sister company, will also sell the i-MiEV-based electric car under the CitroĂ«n brand.

Mitsubishi already has a jump on the competition between companies for the electric car market, having been the first major auto-manufacturer to launch a mass-market electric car, the i-MiEV, in Japan earlier this year. The i-MiEV is currently undergoing testing in the US and is set for US launch by the end of next year.

I had a chance to drive the i-MiEV last year and can say, unequivocally, that it is one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven and, along with the Nissan LEAF and upcoming electric Ford Focus, is one of only a handful of electric cars that I’m truly excited about.

I know many folks are skeptical that electric cars will find broad acceptance, but so are the manufacturers, which is why they are being so conservative with release schedules and relatively slow roll outs. However, I think we’ll see that electric cars have so much demand that the car companies who bring them to market will have trouble building enough of them.
