Ford C-Max: A Small Car for Europe, and Beyond?
The Ford C-Max is the first car based on Ford’s new global small car platform.
After the publication of several spy shots of the upcoming C-Max people-mover, Ford of Europe has gone ahead and released its own official images. The heretofore-secret C-Max, scheduled to go into production in Europe next year, will have its official debut Sept. 15 during news previews of the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The C-Max takes its design cues from the Iosis Max concept car introduced at the Geneva Motor Show this, but the production model is a bit bigger, apparently to accommodate extra cargo room and seating positions. The design strives for a coupelike passenger car look.
Arguably the most interesting feature of the C-Max will be a new 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine. Several diesel choices are also likely to be offered for European markets, where diesel power is often preferred. But the petrol engine is expected to be available with the Focus compact that will arrive in the United States late next year.
Both the C-Max and Focus are among a new generation of One Ford global vehicles developed from the automaker’s new C-segment platform, due to arrive over the next several years.
We will have to wait until at least its Frankfurt introduction to learn more about where the C-Max is to be sold. But since the C-Max is based on the same platform as the next Focus, can a United States-spec C-Max be far behind?
