Maruti 800 remains one of the most popular cars in the Indian market. This is despite the fact that Alto has overtaken it to become the most popular car in India.

A lot of first time car buyers still go for this model and Maruti ends up selling around 70,000 units each year.

However, Maruti finds itself in tough situation with this model as it is unlikely to meet the Euro-IV emission norms that would be required in India by 2010.

The company has said that it would be tough for them to get the improved technology required to meet the pollution norms by that time.

It remains to be seen if Maruti indeed replace this model with Alto which can be made slightly cheaper.

Or they do something special and keep this model alive.

Maruti needs 800 to remain in India to provide the challenge for the Tata Nano car. A slight price cut in Maruti 800 could make it a worthy challenger to Tata Nano.
