Japan's No.2 automaker Nissan Motor Co will launch a campaign to repair the start-up problems with its Leaf electric cars, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The company received reports from some Leaf drivers that the car -- which made its Japanese and U.S. debuts in December -- failed to start, the newspaper said.

The automaker said the glitch is not a safety-related one and will not cause major accidents, the business daily said.

The repair will cover all the 8,000 cars made in the United States and Japan although only a "very small proportion" of them have been affected, the Nikkei reported.

Nissan will reprogram software to fix the problem as part of the voluntary repair, and dealers will start contacting customers next week, the paper said.
