Hyundai has been grabbing plenty of attention with its new Genesis sedan lately, but its entry-level four-door hasn't been doing quite so well. The Elantra is still a bit player in the compact sedan class, so Hyundai is looking to ramp up its numbers with an all-new Elantra next year.

Spotted during hot-weather testing in Death Valley, California, these prototypes of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra reveal an all-new, more streamlined look. Even with all the camouflage, it's clear that these test mules have a slightly lower roof line that gives this Elantra the look of a stretched coupe or even a hatchback.

The new design makes this Elantra appear slightly bigger overall, but it's probably an optical illusion. Hyundai's engineers look to have stretched the wheelbase while shortening the front and rear overhangs, a classic play that improves interior room while giving the sedan a sportier look.

Under the hood, the 2011 Hyundai Elantra will get Hyundai's latest Theta-II 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. Expect a sizable improvement in both horsepower and torque, as this engine has been shown in home-market models with as much as 166 horsepower. There's also a good chance that Hyundai will use its own six-speed automatic transmission, as the company has said that it intends to put the gearbox in up to 16 models. Our spy shots also show what appears to be a six-speed manual shifter, so even base models should get exceptional mileage. Hyundai is also expected to release a hybrid version of this Elantra about a year after launch.

Look for the official unveil of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra early next year. U.S. sales could start as early as next fall.
