Portland - A new 'green' electric car, built in Eugene, made its debut Wednesday in downtown Portland. The prototype of the “Pulse" was on display at Pioneer Courthouse Square.
The car, made by Arcimoto, LLC of Eugene, has only three wheels to cut down on weight and drag. The company says it can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge, and takes only six hours to recharge.
Arcimoto CEO Erik Stafl says the Pulse’s motor is more than 400% more efficient than gas-powered engines.
“The great thing is, it's a fully-electric vehicle, so there's no emissions whatsoever,” Stafl said. “It charges from a standard household outlet. And in terms of efficiency, even if you use dirty coal producing that electricity, much less pollution is generated in total, per mile driven than any gas care out there, currently."
Arcimoto is taking pre-orders for the electric car. A down-payment of $500 will put a customer on the waiting list. The first cars should be available by fall of next year, at a cost of just under $20,000.
