According to sources, the eagerly-awaited Rs. 1 lakh car,Tata Nano is ready to hit dealer networks by February end this year. The Indian automaker is anticipating the existing plants to produce about 7,000 vehicles by the end of March. The production is likely to be scaled up to 80,000 over the next year. Tata Motors has recently indicated that it is aiming to achieve the previously set target of 150,000 Tata Nano cars if the new factory opens in the first quarter of 2010-2011.

According to Nano vendor sources who requested anonymity, earlier, they expected that at least 15,000 Nanos would roll out from Pantnagar in the fourth quarter, but now the plant would be able to roll out only half of that number. The original target of 96,000 cars for this fiscal was trimmed to 50,000 cars following the agitation at Singur. Sources also said that the suppliers of the Nano car would cater to delivery of parts from their existing plants to both of Tata Motors facilities at Pune (for engine components) and Pantnagar.

Tatas created an international stir in January 2008 when it unveiled Nano, claiming that it would be the world's cheapest car. With a starting target price of approximately US$ 2,500, the Nano could make private car ownership accessible to tens of millions of Indian citizens. Tata nicknamed the Nano as the people's car.
