The 6-Series Coupe and Convertible are luxurious, high-status vehicles that put ride comfort over sporty performance.
Though competitors like the Porsche 911 offer more capable sports performance, the 2009 BMW 6-Series holds its own in terms of luxury. In fact, Forbes says it's a great choice for anyone who wants to "stand out" and is looking for a vehicle "that blends sporty dynamics and decadent luxury." However, its too-snug backseat and complicated iDrive controls detract from its appeal. Overall, the 6-Series is more about status than everyday practicality and visceral performance.
The 6-Series is available in two body styles: 650i Coupe and 650i Convertible. Both feature a smooth 360-horsepower V8 engine.
6-Series Performance
Test drivers find plenty of power in the BMW 6-Series, but say that it handles more like a cruiser than a sports car. "If we were spending this much on a car, we'd be thinking Porsche 911, Jaguar XK, maybe a really nice Boxster, or, if you just want to go fast, even a Corvette Z06," writes Car and Driver. "But for those looking for a cruiser more comfortable than sporty that identifies them as a person of means, the 650i will not disappoint."
6-Series Exterior
Auto writers admire the 6-Series' classy exterior design. "If it's not the Ultimate Driving Machine, the 650i is a strong status machine," writes Car and Driver. Continue with our full 6-Series Exterior Review to learn about the 650i Convertible and new color options for 2009.
6-Series Interior
Critics are pleased with the 6-Series' lavish trim and comfortable front seats. Still, reviewers find that its cabin won't appeal to everyone. Kelley Blue Book explains, "Those who find fault with the styling of the 650i Coupe's rear quarters, or who are put off by the complexity of its iDrive system-that integrates control of the audio, ventilation, navigation and communication functions-might want to consider a Jaguar XK or Porsche 911 Carrera S." 6-Series Safety
The '09 6-Series hasn't been crash tested by the federal government or insurance industry, but features a wide array of safety technology -- including Dynamic Stability and Traction Control. Continue with our full 6-Series Safety Review to read about potential visibility issues.
