Italian automaker calls new berlinetta its fastest production car ever.

The fastest road car ever built by Ferrari, the 599 GTO, was unveiled on the Italian automaker’s website today prior to its long-awaited introduction at the Beijing Auto Show.

The photos show a splendid front-engine berlinetta that’s designed to recapture the glory of the famed 250 GTO race car of the 1960s. The new GTO (which stands for Gran Turismo Omologato) uses the latest technology from Ferrari’s Formula 1 cars, which the Maranello company says will provide performance that eclipses any Ferrari that’s gone before.

Just 599 examples of the supercar will be produced, Ferrari says, and will cost somewhere north of $425,000, according to news reports. The car is based largely on the 599XX “advanced experimental track car.”

The 599 GTO is powered by a V12 with a displacement of 5,999 cc, signified by the car’s name, which produces 670 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 457 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm. The transmission is a paddle-operated F1-style six speed.

Zero-62 mph comes in just 3.35 seconds, according to Ferrari, with a top speed of 208 mph.

The suspension system uses new springs and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar, combined with Ferrari’s second-generation Magnetorheological Supension Control, working in tandem with Vehicle Dynamic Control and latest-generation F1-Trac traction control, the company says.

“This makes the car extremely responsive to driver inputs – thanks in part to the adoption of a very direct steering ratio – but also very stable under braking, sharper on turn-in, more precise in cornering and quicker out of corners,” Ferrari said in a media release.

Braking is accomplished with “the latest, second-generation carbon-ceramic brakes, which are lighter and offer better performance, (and) new aerodynamic innovations, such as the wheel doughnuts which increase aerodynamic efficiency as well as improve brake cooling.”

The 599 GTO will be revealed to the public at the end of April in Beijing, underscoring the importance of the Asian market to the Italian automaker.
