Most of the world’s most important motor shows – Frankfurt, Paris and Geneva – are held in Europe.

When the New York motor show rolls around at the start of April each year, European manufacturers are forced to box up their newest products and ship them Westwards across the Atlantic.

Although this is a bit of a logistical chore, manufacturers don’t really expect much to go wrong once the cars have been landed Stateside. This year though, BMW’s exhibit at the New York auto show turned out to be quite an expensive exercise.

Six of the company’s showcars were stolen in three separate incidents whilst processing from a New Jersey port facility to New York City.

Amongst the cars stolen were a 535i xDrive, 650i, 750Li and a rather rare 550i Sophisto. The 550i featured a special new hue of surface finishing. This particular Sophisto coloured car is claimed to be worth $90 000 alone.

The first heist happened on 13 March, three weeks before the opening of the New York auto show.

BMW says they have given over all relevant information to the federal authorities.
