First introduced in 2007, the Mazda CX-9, regardless of what category one chooses to place it in, was recognized as one of the best SUVs/crossovers/minivans/station wagons in its class.

When you hear about a new crossover vehicle joining an auto manufacturer's stable, your reaction might likely be to stifle a yawn. But Mazda's addition to the crossover category differed in that it displayed a level of styling that was not only distinctive, but purposeful.

The CX-9 seats seven passengers in three rows, and was engineered with Mazda's, "soul of a sports car" philosophy, combining a sporty driving spirit with sport-utility vehicle versatility and functionality.

For 2009, the CX-9 continues with its high level of performance delivered by the standard 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine, which delivers 273 horsepower along with 270 pound-feet of torque. The engine connects to a six-speed sport automatic transmission with Sport Shift, allowing for both automatic and manual gear changes.

The CX-9 comes in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Also continuing for the 2009 model year is an available Blind Spot Monitoring system. New or enhanced, the CX-9 adds a trip computer as standard fare on all trim levels. Bluetooth phone capability has been added to the Sport model and SIRIUS satellite radio has been added to the audio package. The Grand Touring model now receives an auto-dimming rearview mirror along with Homelink. Heated seats and heated outside mirrors are now standard with the Sport Power Seat package, and the Trailer Tow pre-wiring is standard on all AWD model CX-9s.

Front-wheel drive is standard on the CX-9 and it rides on 20-inch wheels.

The design exhibits an aggressively rising belt line, topped by a boldly curved roof structure. The front fenders are pronounced, flanking the sculpted hood, which holds court over the new grille residing in a highly sloped nose. The windshield is sharply raked as well, adding to the overall aerodynamic efficiency of the CX-9. The large, bright dual exhaust outlets hint at the vehicle's performance prowess.

The interior has a sporty feel, with a two-tone trim featuring accent stripes bordering each seat cushion. Switchgear and controls are well thought out for optimum ease of use, while gauges are ideally placed and legible. Storage capacity is plentiful, with the center console able to stash a compact laptop.

My test 2009 CX-9 was a Grand Touring model with front-wheel drive. The base price was set at $33,805, with the price-as-tested totaling $39,260. The list of standard features and equipment was extensive and impressive.

Summary
Despite visual similarities, the Mazda CX-9 is not an extended, three-row version of the CX-7 - it is based upon the modified underpinnings of the Ford Edge, with some componentry borrowed from the Mazda6. Handling is surprisingly agile - reflective of its sports car heritage. But the CX-9 has a higher purpose for its existence - it's intended for use as stylish, roomy and comfortable transportation for a family and gear.

Given its attractiveness, value, equipment content, price point, power output and serviceability for both passengers and cargo, the CX-9 continues as one of the top contenders to compete on the crossover SUV playing field.
