The TSX has always been a well-built entry-level-premium sport sedan, with top-tier features and better than average dependability. Really, there's little that anyone can complain about, except maybe the high-revving four-cylinder powerplant, an engine doesn't suit everyone's ideal of how a luxury car should sound or feel.
Acura will address this issue for the 2010 model year, with the option of a 280-horsepower version of its VTEC valvetrain control and a dual-stage induction system enhanced 3.5-litre V6, which will better suit the recently upgraded model. Based on the European Honda Accord, a smaller car than the North American Accord that gets a less powerful version of this engine and underpins the larger Acura TL that uses the 3.5-litre mill for its most basic front-wheel drive model, the little TSX should be a real hauler when let loose on Canadian roads.
The automotive market may be slowing down, but not Acura," commented Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "With improved acceleration and handling, the new 280-horsepower V6 adds even more sport to the already sporty nature of the popular TSX sports sedan."
Mated to the new V6 is Acura's Sequential SportShift automatic gearbox, featuring Grade Logic Control and Shift Hold Control, while steering-wheel mounted F1-style paddle shifters can allow for more control during spirited driving.
The new V6-powered TSX will also get a reworked front fascia, a sportier version of its double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension setup and upgraded split five-spoke 18-inch alloy rims wrapped in Michelin Pilot all-season rubber, one-inch larger in diameter than the four-cylinder model comes with.
While sales of the four-cylinder model should remain strong due to its strong performance and thrifty fuel economy, the V6 will allow the compact model to compete more directly with other small luxury cars from Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, etc.
Like its rivals and the four-cylinder TSX, the top-line model will benefit from a rigid body structure and all of the latest passive and active safety features for the highest ratings in both governmental (NHTSA) and independent (IIHS) crash tests, the latter of which chose it as a Top Safety Pick.
All Acura models come well equipped, and the TSX V6 will be no exception with standard features like a leather-appointed interior, a power glass sunroof, automatic climate control, a premium seven-speaker audio system with CD, AM/FM tuner, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, USB port and auxiliary jack, etc.
Options will include the Technology Package that adds Acuralink satellite navigation with a rear-view camera, and the Acura/ELS Surround premium audio system.
The new V6-powered TSX will go on sale this summer, and will reportedly be a forerunner of big changes in the future Acura lineup. Stay tuned for more Acura news.
