Monte Carlo car maker Venturi will be manufacturing only 25 of its new Volage electric two seater sports car, fewer than Tesla. Like all fine collectibles, car will be assembled by hand and is expected in 2012. However, incorporated into what will surely be one of the most expensive cars on the market, will be new electric car technologies.

Venturi worked closely with Michelin in the development of the Volage. Incorporating Michelin’s new Active Wheel in the car allowed the designers more leeway when designing the interior and exterior of the car. The designers didn’t have to worry about providing room for an engine in the front or rear, or any room for the suspension, transmission or gear box.

Instead, Michelin has included two electric motors in each of the four Active Wheels, one engine to propel the car and the other to control the electric suspension. All other components have been miniaturized and placed within the wheel with the two engines.

The car chassis is a carbon sandwich/aluminum honeycomb that is pressure sealed. The body of the car is composed of carbon fiber. making the car strong and light. Unlike other electric cars, Venturi developed the Volage carbon body specifically for use in electric cars. Because of that, the Volage has developed a car that carries the batteries within its very structure, making the car safer for the passengers and the batteries.

The Volage uses 45 kilowatt polymere lithium batteries. It will go from 0-100 km/hr (0-62 m/hr) in under 5 seconds. Driving at 90 km/hr (55 m/hr) the Volage will go 199 miles per charge. An 80% battery charge takes 4 hours with a 10 kilowatt external battery charger or 8 hours with the on board charger.

The inside dashboard controls are touchscreen and allow the driver to configure the car anyway he/she wants. For instance, the driver can program the car for speed over distance, or comfort over speed. No other electric car gives the driver the control to make such decisions.

Overall, the car is a model of new and innovative technology from the wheels right on up to the dashboard. All of this technology is expected to make its way into mass market electric vehicles within the next decade.
