You won’t often see me with a bicycle. I was just using it to test this car’s boot space (it’s big). No, since we invented the internal-combustion engine, I’ve been waiting for the bicycle to die out – which brings me to today’s subject, evolution.
The BMW X6's boot is big enough for a bike
Apparently, 51 per cent of Americans don’t believe it exists at all, and about one in ten of us agree with them – but you’ve only got to look at the shapes of cars to see evolution in action. I know they’re not actually breeding with each other (though I’ve got my suspicions about some French cars), but the principles of natural selection are definitely at work.
Only cars such as the Porsche 911 and Range Rover stay the same for more than 30 years, because they’re perfectly suited to their environment. The rest adapt over time.
The rectangular tin-box 1981 Ford Fiesta is now the swooshy, slant-eyed 2008 Ford Fiesta. Same with Golfs, Astras and Corollas. We got fatter, so cars got wider. We became safety-conscious, so cars’ front ends became squashier.
Evolution generally flows smoothly in one direction, but sometimes it takes a funny turn. Like the Lystrosaurus pig-beasts that ruled the Earth before the dinosaurs. Read about them? Obviously evolution said, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’ and started again.
