Mumbai: The Tata group chairman Mr Ratan Tata in a letter to Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh a few days ago had clearly stated “We are examining various options in great details” and thanked the Maharashtra chief minister for offering him all facilities, most importantly land for his Nano small car project in the state. Tata Motors already have facilities near Pune.

Mantralaya sources said the CM had offered Tata a warm welcome and land wherever they wanted. The CM is believed to have mentioned several important towns like Pune, Aurangabad, Amravati, Latur or Pune and up to 2,500 hectare land. Mr Deshmukh is the first chief minister to offer land to the Tatas after the head of the Tata Group declared that he could not put up with the prevailing conditions at Singur.
Mr Tata is believed to have said the situation “continues to be uncertain” in West Bengal and he would like to move away to some “congenial environment” so that the production of Nano is not interrupted.

The letter also says, the Tata officials are examining all options in great details. Currently, the Maharashtra CM is abroad and is scheduled to return on 1 October. Sources said Mr Tata would meet the CM on 2 or 3 October. The state government is already thrilled with the sanctioning of nine new SEZs in Maharashtra by the Union commerce ministry. Four will be in Pune and one each in Mumbai, Nagpur, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Satara. n SNS
