Nissan has unveiled an electric car carrying a battery developed by the Japanese automaker to deliver more power than the type common in today's hybrids.
Mitsubishi, meanwhile, says an affiliate will build a factory in Japan to produce lithium-ion batteries for its upcoming electric car. That vehicle is planned for rental next year.
Both Nissan and Mitsubishi plan to begin selling their electric cars in 2010.
Automakers around the world are trying to develop so-called green vehicles amid growing concerns about soaring gas prices and global warming. Electric vehicles are zero-emission.
