Budding new British sportscar manufacturer Jetstream has announced it has begun production of the SC250 that was unveiled at the Autosport motor show last January.

Created to be a lightweight mid-engined road legal racer, the SC250 gets the same 250bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol that powers the current Vauxhall Astra VXR.

Weighing in at just 700kg, the angular Extreme will be significantly quicker than the Luton hatch, sprinting to 60mph in less than four seconds.

Designed by the man responsible for the recent Ford Thunderbird the Extreme owes its unusual look to hours spent in a wind tunnel. Under the skin the Jetstream boast F1-style inboard suspension and an adjustable ECU that changes the engine's characteristics depending on whether you are on road or track.

Pricing begins at £29,495 with the firm hoping to build 50 cars a year at its Cornish factory.
