In the high tech, high stakes world of 21st century super sports cars, Mercedes-Benz has just claimed bragging rights with the new SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive.
Not only is this the world’s fastest electrically powered production car, it’s also the most powerful high performance vehicle AMG has ever made. Providing all that speed and strength are four electric motors producing 740-horsepower and 737.5 lb.-ft. of torque. With their instantaneous thrust, the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive is able to rocket from 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
Top speed is electrically limited to 250 km/h and the automaker says its 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack gives it a range of 250 km.
All that while being free of CO2 emissions.
SUPER CAR IN ACTION
“The SLS AMG CoupĂ© Electric Drive is redefining standards for cars with electric drive systems. As the most powerful gullwing model ever, it also epitomizes the enduring innovative flair of Mercedes-AMG,” said chairman Ola Källenius. “With the help of our colleagues at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, England, we are bringing fascinating high tech from the world of Formula 1 to the road.”
Keeping the coupe glued to the pavement is a unique way of distributing torque to individual wheels. The four compact permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors, each with a maximum speed of 13,000 rpm, drive the four wheels selectively by means of a special transmission arrangement for each axle.
Unlike lesser electric vehicles, which operate silently, the SLS AMG CoupĂ© Electric Drive will be music to the driver’s ears, equipped with “SLS eSound” – a special soundtrack which captures the acoustic thrill of driving a powerful car, even without an AMG V8 under the hood.
So everything sounds great – except the name. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG CoupĂ© Electric Drive is a bit of a mouthful. I wonder what owners will call it. Just “The Coupe” would be my guess.
