Maserati sports car

Maserati has new sedans and SUVs in the pipeline, but it hasn't forgotten the sportscars.

While we can't imagine getting tired of hearing about new Italian sportscars, if you're bored of all the news surrounding Maserati, you'd better hold on, because the Modenese automaker is just gearing up. Maserati is in the midst of a major product offensive that will see it expand far beyond its current two-model line-up. Next in the pipeline, according to reports, are two new sportscars. One of these new models will be a replacement to the current GranTurismo, which reports indicate will be smaller than the slightly portly model it will succeed.

Sources expect the new GranTurismo to be more in line with the size of the Jaguar XK. Or to put it another way, it will be closer to the Aston Martin Vantage than the larger DB9. The same reports are also indicating that Maserati is going ahead with plans to build a more extreme sportscar to rival the Porsche 911 and Jaguar's new F-Type. Maserati's CEO had previously indicated plans to build a version of the Alfa Romeo 4C (which Maserati will be building for its sister company) with a V8 engine. We've also recently seen reports that the Trident marque was planning a new model based on the GranTurismo.

Whether one of these models ends up being one and the same or another model entirely remains to be seen, but one way or another, the new Maserati coupes are slated to join the new Quattroporte, Ghibli and Levante in the company's rapidly expanding portfolio. Powering these new models are a familar of new engines recently revealed to include a new V6 and V8, both of them featuring direct injection and twin turbochargers. A diesel engine is also slated to help Maserati reach new customers (in Europe especially) that could be based on the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 in the European-model Jeep Grand Cherokee.
