It looks like a Lamborghini Gallardo, and sounds like a Ferrari. Of course, the engine roars from a speaker box, because this car is all electric. With two electric motors offering 187 horsepower, spiking to 375 horsepower with 800 Nm torque for 30 seconds bursts of speed, the Alpha-2 can go 0-100 km/hr (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds. It's raison d'etre: proving that electric cars are not slow and boring.
In the country of unlimited speed, some German media reports diss the Alpha-2's top speed of 240 km/hr (143 mph). But in countries with an ordinary respect for safety and fuel efficiency, that speed should more than suffice to get one in as much trouble with the police as one needs.
One charge covers a range of up to 300 km (185 miles), and the batteries can be filled to 80% with only 30 minutes on the wire. German blog Emissionslos (Emission-free) reports the price of the Alpha-2: €292,000 (US$ 423,000).
The Alpha-2 joins a fleet of e-WOLF electric cars -- which include two other vehicles in the alpha-race series as well as urban transport (delta-Fleet), small trucks (omega-Cargo), and electric motorbikes (epsilon-Scoot).
