Scion's next sports car got a rousing introduction at the New York auto show. Sure, it's only a concept for now. But Scion FR-S is a sure bet as a production build.

Get this: Sexy looks, a Subaru-boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and a perfect weight balance. Best of all, Scion expects to price the production version under $30,000.

By including the boxer-style engine -- a horizontally opposed four-banger like the old Volkswagen Beetle powerplants -- Scion gets a car that's more low slung and can slide the weight farther back. It will come with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. It would be the first rear-wheel-drive Toyota in a long time.

Scion boss Jack Hollis, who introduced it at the show to lights and reverberating music, says his team was blown away by the "volume of buzz," including speculation about the name. He says FR-S stands for "front engine, rear-wheel-drive, sport." We just know it's cool.
