Porsche Boxster E
Porsche definitely has a way with making electric cars look sexy. We've known since last summer that the company was planning to test three electric cars. The 918 Spyder hybrid has been a hot topic among TreeHugger's EV enthusiasts, so the first of the trio of 100% electric cars to be unveiled is the Boxster E is sure to be create a buzz. This is one prototype that will undergo testing before making it to the manufacturing line, but with 240 horsepower and 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, it will be eagerly awaited.

The Local reports that the three prototypes will be "rolling laboratories" for determining how practical they might be for everyday use. The prototype has a 29-kW battery pack providing about 100 miles per charge. That's not too bad considering the power it packs.

"Electric mobility will be one of Porsche's central challenges in the coming years, and our engineers are ready to meet the challenge with their usual high standards," said Porsche boss Matthias Müller in a statement released on Thursday.

The company wants to win the consumer over with functionality as well as with the drool-factor, and this Boxster-E seems to meet the criteria. However, there's still the issue of the infrastructure needed to support wide use of electric cars, something the company is well aware of.

According to All Cars Electric, "Volkswagen, who took over Porsche recently, provide the twin electric motors used to provide 240 horsepower of power to the rear wheels. The sportscar maker has yet to detail exact specifications but expect the e-Boxster to perform on a similar level to Porsche's gasoline-powered version."

There's no word on when consumers will be able to get their hands on an all-electric version of the Boxster, and other details on the guts of the car are fairly sparse. However, we'll keep you updated as the all-electric sports cars are tested.
