HONDA NSX

Along with Mazda's iconic RX-7 and the upcoming Toyota FT-86, few cars of late have inspired as much frustration among fans as the on-again off-again Honda NSX.

This time last year, Honda announced that while the global financial crisis had brought about the end of development for the next-generation NSX, it would begin production of a SuperGT series racing car based on the aborted sports car.

New reports this week have reignited speculation however, with US publication MotorTrend reporting that Honda insiders have hinted at a restarted NSX program. But here's the kicker: this time, the report claims, the project will use a reversed version of the front-wheel-drive Accord platform.

Where the initial plan called for a V10 powerplant and supercar classification, this new NSX will reportedly lean more to the sports-car persuasion, drawing power from a four- or six-cylinder engine.

The report adds that a 300kW V6 is expected, and that a patent application has been uncovered in Japan with details for such an arrangement, including a mid-mounted engine and Honda's SH-AWD system.

It remains to be seen if these details can be believed, but with a 2014 launch date reportedly on the cards... time will tell.
