BMW’s youthful, versatile and efficient X1 will join the Bavarian luxury brand’s line-up in Australia with a starting price of $43,500.

The Sports Activity Vehicle will attract a new generation of BMW customers and is set to officially go on sale on Saturday 10 April.

In line with the very high level of pre-launch customer interest, the company has announced it is expanding the X1 line-up with the addition of two petrol models.

For those who desire typical BMW rear-wheel drive agility and driving pleasure the company has also confirmed the availability of the sDrive system, which delivers even more impressive fuel economy.

On top of the two diesel models previously announced for Australia, BMW has confirmed an entry-level BMW X1 sDrive18i, which is powered by a 110 kW four-cylinder petrol engine featuring fully variable VALVETRONIC valve management, variable double-Vanos camshaft adjustment and an adjustable intake system.

The four-cylinder unit develops maximum output at 6,400 rpm and delivers peak torque of 200 Newton-metres at 3,600 rpm, accelerating the BMW X1 sDrive18i from standstill to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds.

At the other end of the scale, BMW will offer a 160 kW straight six-cylinder petrol powered X1 xDrive25i.

Featuring a composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase, as well as double-Vanos and VALVETRONIC valve management, the BMW X1 xDrive25i delivers peak torque of 280 Newton-metres at 2,500 rpm.

Featuring BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology as standard as well as six-speed automatic transmission, the BMW X1 xDrive25i accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The two petrol models will join the two diesel models previously confirmed for Australia, the X1 xDrive20d and X1 xDrive23d.

BMW has also announced it will offer a rear wheel drive version of the two-litre diesel in the form of the X1 sDrive20d, which consumes just 5.3 litres per 100 km and an impressive 139 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

The BMW X1 is the first premium vehicle of its kind to offer the driving pleasure so characteristic of a BMW X model in the compact segment.

Built at BMW Plant Leipzig in Germany, the BMW X1 stands out through its dynamic handling, versatile interior, a standard of efficiency quite unparalleled in a vehicle of this kind, and supreme safety already confirmed by the maximum score of five stars in the Euro NCAP test.
