The latest BMW model to toss the old twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six in favor of the new N55 single turbo version is the X6. Starting in 2011, the X6 xDrive35i will get the new N55 engine, which BMW claims is lighter than the outgoing model, while delivering better acceleration and improved fuel economy.

In the X6 the new engine will make 306-hp and 295 ft-lbs of torque, which is 6 more horsepower and 5 fewer ft-lbs.

Also helping to improve fuel economy and acceleration is BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, which first debuted in the current 7 Series and has since found its way into several new BMW models. Both the 35i and 50i models will get this new 8-speed unit.
