Nissan says it has already been contacted by over 22,000 people who are interested in the upcoming all-electric Leaf. Starting next spring, Nissan will take reservations from customers who want to test-drive or buy the car. The company hopes to record 20,000 reservations by the time the Leaf launches about a year from now.

Initial roll-out of the Leaf will occur in metro areas including San Diego and Los Angeles; Tucson, Arizona; Seattle, Washington; and Portland, Oregon. About 70 percent of those who have contacted Nissan so far live in or around those areas. Nissan says the ideal Leaf owner would drive fewer than 100 miles per day and live in a two-car household, where a second gasoline car would serve for longer trips. Of those who’ve contacted Nissan, 90 percent qualify in the former case and 75 percent in the latter.
