A new report says Chrysler will try to stoke its sales, even as it's in bankruptcy court, with a new rebate for returning shoppers. If you own a recent-vintage Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge product, Chrysler will issue a certificate for another $1,000 off the price of one of their new vehicles.
The Wall Street Journal reports Chrysler's new offer is valid even with all its existing rebates and incentives, which have topped $6,000 on some new models in recent months. The Journal reports about 9 million Chrysler owners will get the coupons--at a potential cost of $9 billion to the company.
There's no word on which vehicles may or may not be included in the plan--for sure, the slow-selling Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring will be on the list, but it's uncertain whether the company will send out rebates for its Dodge Viper sportscar or the latest 2009 Dodge Ram pickup trucks.
Chrysler is trying to keep its image afloat while it restructures in bankruptcy court. Earlier this week, it announced it would drop 789 dealers from its American sales network. It's also in the initial stages of combining its product planning with new investors, Italy's Fiat Group.
