The world's cheapest car, the much-awaited Tata Nano, is finally here. Not only is it an all-weather vehicle, it could be yours for a song, too. Well almost, as the initial amount is only Rs2,999 if you want to book the car on loan.
The base version of the 'Rs1 lakh car' will cost you just over Rs1.34 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). Even the high end, loaded variant comes for about Rs1.85 lakh -- less than the non-AC version of the next available car, the Maruti 800 (Rs1.96 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai).
The base price of Rs1 lakh -- which rises to Rs1.34 lakh after transportation, value-added tax, sales tax, octroi, and other charges are added -- will be maintained for the first 1,00,000 customers, who will be chosen by lottery. Prices may rise for the rest, if they want to stay booked. Servicing the first 1,00,000 orders will take all of 2010.
More about Nano Specifications, Details and Booking.
"We are committed to the price, it is not a gimmick. We made a promise and we are keeping it," said Ratan Tata, the man who dreamt it all up and delivered. "We had never conceived the Nano as the cheapest car but as a vehicle to enable Indian families to own an affordable, all-weather mode of transportation. Today, we are keeping our promise."
The critics are ecstatic. Says Sirish Chandran, editor, Overdrive magazine, "Without a shred of doubt this is the most impressive car to sport the Tata logo. The competition should be very worried."
