It was business as usual on the XK assembly line at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham, even though used car sales slumped to 1966 levels in August.

The company, which has been enjoying a sales revival recently thanks to the success of its new XF, which is also built at the plant, was among the majority of manufacturers whose registrations were thrown into reverse.

Meanwhile, England test cricketer Monty Panesar became Jaguar’s latest “Brand Champion” when he was handed the keys to a new XKR sports car.

The left-arm spin-bowler was presented with the keys to the car, which has a showroom value of about £70,000, by Jaguar UK marketing director David Steele.

Monty earlier toured the company’s Castle Bromwich assembly plant to see the 115mph, 4.2 litre, XKs being built.

“I like the XK, it is a nice sexy sports car which I really enjoy driving,” Monty said. “I was really impressed with the factory and with how much detail goes into building a car.”

Mr Steele said: “It is fantastic having Monty as a Brand Ambassador for Jaguar. He is a great sportsman and we build great sports cars.”
